What is Kinesio Tape?

Kinesio tape, also known as kinesiology or K-tape, is a thin, elastic therapeutic tape applied to the skin to provide targeted support and stability to muscles and joints. It successfully treats various orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and medical conditions.

Kinesio tape was developed in the 1970s by Dr. Kenzo Kase, a Japanese chiropractor and acupuncturist. Dissatisfied with the limitations of traditional athletic tapes, Dr. Kase set out to create a more versatile and skin-friendly alternative that could provide therapeutic benefits without restricting movement.

After years of research and experimentation, Dr. Kase developed the unique kinesiology tape we know today. Unlike traditional athletic tapes, The tape’s elastic properties and ability to lift the skin were designed to mimic the function of human muscles and fascia, allowing for improved circulation, pain relief, and enhanced physical performance.

This combination allows a patient to be active while healing takes place.

How does Kinesio Tape work?

Our chiropractors in Covington use Kinesio tape to gently lift the skin, which can:

  • Reduce muscle pain and tension by improving circulation and lymphatic drainage.
  • Provide structural support to joints and muscles without restricting movement.
  • Enhance proprioception (awareness of body position) to improve stability and prevent further injury.
  • Facilitate muscle activation and rehabilitation by stimulating specific muscle groups.
